In Paul Ricœur's recent major work, "The Course of Recognition," the philosopher embarks on a philosophical study of the recognition category. Ricœur explicitly states that his aim is not to develop a theory of recognition but rather to construct a regulated polysemy of the term. However, the work seems to surpass its original intention and evolve into a foundation for the possibility of mutual recognition provided by states of peace.
Ricœur deems it crucial to revisit Hegel's ideas on recognition, as Hegel enables the foundation of communal living in the desire for recognition. Furthermore, Hegelian thought helps counter the perils of atomism found in political philosophies like Hobbes's. Furthermore, Ricœur's reading of Hegel serves as a starting point for his proposal of states of peace as an alternative to the struggle for recognition.
However, Ricœur's proposal includes a critique of both Hegel and Honneth, specifically addressing their excessive emphasis on the question of struggle. Consequently, this work aims to revisit Ricœur's treatment of Hegel's concept of recognition (Anerkennung) to explore its contributions and highlight certain criticisms stemming from a reevaluation of the conflictual aspect inherent in recognition.
